MEGA CHARIZARD

Only two Pokémon ever earned a second Mega Evolution, and Charizard is one of them. Mega X trades its wings for Fire/Dragon muscle; Mega Y keeps the sky and weaponises the sun. Here is how to choose your dragon.

Two Megas, one legend

Charizard shares a rare honour with Mewtwo: it is one of only two Pokémon ever given two separate Mega Evolutions. Both arrived in Generation VI’s Pokémon X & Y, and rather than a single upgrade they handed trainers a real decision at the team-building stage. That choice still shapes how Charizard is played today.

Mega Charizard X reinvents the Fire starter as a Fire/Dragon bruiser. Dropping the Flying type erases the crippling ×4 Rock weakness, the scales turn black, the flames burn blue, and Tough Claws makes Dragon Dance a genuine win condition. Mega Charizard Y goes the opposite way. It keeps Fire/Flying, calls down harsh sun with Drought, and swings a 159 Special Attack that fires Solar Beam in a single turn.

The pick comes down to team support. X asks for almost nothing and rewards aggressive, balanced squads. Y needs hazard control to survive Stealth Rock, but it pays you back with some of the hardest special hits in the whole franchise. Either way, Mega Evolution kept Charizard a top-tier threat across competitive play for years.

The black-scaled dragon

Mega Charizard X

FireDragonBST 634

Mega Charizard X trades its wings’ Flying typing for raw Dragon power. Its body turns jet-black and its flames burn blue, reflecting a huge jump in Attack to 130 and far sturdier defences. Crucially, becoming Fire/Dragon erases the dreaded ×4 Rock weakness that haunts the base form.

Ability

Tough Claws

Boosts the power of contact moves by 30% — Flare Blitz, Dragon Claw and Earthquake all hit noticeably harder.

Why run Mega Charizard X

  • Loses the ×4 Rock weakness — no longer OHKO’d by Stealth Rock + priority
  • Dragon Dance sweeper: +1 Attack and Speed snowballs fast
  • Tough Claws turns Flare Blitz into one of the hardest-hitting Fire moves in the game
  • Bulkier on both sides, so it survives hits the base form never could

Watch out:Gains a weakness to Dragon and Fairy types, and still dislikes fast Water and Ground coverage.

Mega Charizard Y

Mega Charizard Y keeps the Fire/Flying typing but becomes a terrifying special attacker, with Special Attack rocketing to 159. Its signature Drought turns the sky harsh the instant it switches in, so a sun-boosted Fire Blast threatens to melt almost anything that isn’t a dedicated wall.

Ability

Drought

Summons harsh sunlight the moment it enters battle, powering up every Fire move by 50% and letting Solar Beam fire instantly.

Why run Mega Charizard Y

  • Drought-boosted Fire Blast is one of the strongest single attacks in the metagame
  • Solar Beam fires in a single turn under its own sunlight
  • Excellent special bulk (115 Sp. Def) to tank special hits
  • Anchors dedicated sun teams for other Chlorophyll sweepers

Watch out:Keeps the ×4 Rock weakness, so Stealth Rock removes half its HP on every switch-in.

Frequently asked

Which is better, Mega Charizard X or Y?+

Neither is strictly better — it depends on your team. Mega X is a bulkier physical sweeper that loses the ×4 Rock weakness, while Mega Y is a special nuke that powers up Fire moves with Drought but keeps that Rock weakness.

Does Mega Charizard X lose its Flying type?+

Yes. Mega X becomes Fire/Dragon, which removes its Ground immunity and ×4 Rock weakness but adds new weaknesses to Dragon and Fairy.

Can Charizard Mega Evolve in Scarlet & Violet or Sword & Shield?+

No. Mega Evolution is a Generation VI–VII mechanic. In Sword & Shield, Charizard uses Gigantamax instead; Scarlet & Violet has Terastallization.

How much do the stats change on Mega Evolution?+

Both Mega forms raise Charizard’s base stat total from 534 to 634 (+100), distributed differently — X into Attack and Defense, Y into Special Attack and Special Defense.

Which Mega Stone do I need?+

Charizardite X unlocks Mega Charizard X, and Charizardite Y unlocks Mega Charizard Y. Charizard must hold the stone and your trainer needs a Key Stone.
